Jeb Bush Takes a Detailed Look at Cyber Defence

Applicability of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty to cyber incidents was of particular interest to Governor Jeb Bush during his visit to the Tallinn-based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence last week.

“As cyber defence is increasingly integrated into national and international defence planning, it is important that political decision makers are familiar with the emerging threats,” said Lieutenant Colonel Jens van Laak, the Centre’s Chief of Staff. Lt Col van Laak gave Governor Bush an overview of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and briefed the delegation about international cyber defence exercises as well as the legal framework for cyber defence.

The briefing was part of Governor Bush’s visit to Estonia which includes meetings with political decision-makers and briefings on defence and e-governance.

The Tallinn-based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence is a NATO-accredited knowledge hub, think tank and training facility, focused on interdisciplinary applied research and development as well as consultations, education and exercises in the field of cyber security. The Centre’s mission is to enhance capability, cooperation and information-sharing between NATO, Allies and partners in cyber defence.
